Consumer sentiment has seen two consecutive months of increases, improving by over 10% in June and July, according to the University of Michigan's Survey of Consumers. However, despite these gains, overall sentiment remains 11% lower than a year ago, indicating consumers are still generally somber about the economy.
“So, first off, I will note that, um, what was being discussed as an all-time historic low that we saw in May, uh, we should really think about that as being comparable to the previous all-time low, which was actually just four years ago in June of 2022.”
“So, consumers are not feeling nearly as bad as they were in May, um, but even though, uh, we had these big gains the last two months, we're still 11% below where we were a year ago.”
“So, overall, consumers still feeling pretty somber about the economy.”
