EJ Antoni argued for a fundamental revision of how economic activity and prices are measured, noting that current methods, largely unchanged from a century ago, fail to accurately capture the modern service-based economy. He highlighted the exclusion of unpaid household work as one example of this deficiency.
“It's amazing how David the same way that we measured the economy over a hundred years ago is basically what we do today. Even though there have been massive changes moving from a manufacturing centered economy to a service sector-based economy, we you we don't really uh accurately measure uh so much of of work that's done in the home.”
“For example, think of it. If you have somebody in the home who is cooking and cleaning, that's not really captured in in the way we measure the economy. But as soon as they outsource that to somebody else, now all of a sudden it is captured.”
“And again, that may seem like a very very uh small and and not a very significant example, but that really again these things compound. And when you're talking about this happening for millions of people, and that's just one example. There are countless others. It really, I think, is time to revisit how we measure economic activity, how we measure prices, all of those things.”
