Economist EJ Antoni expressed concern that the US declaration to exit the USMCA could signal the end of free trade in North America. He noted that while the unwinding process will take years, the administration's attempts at reciprocity have not gone well, leading to problematic tariff schedules.
“The US is on track to leave USMCA. So, is this the end of free trade in North America?”
“Well, NAFTA was was certainly done, right? But but in terms of USMCA, uh I'm I'm really really hoping Well, first of all, it it's not done overnight. Yeah. As as you just mentioned, this just starts a process of unwinding it, but it it'll take years for that to happen.”
“Um, are we ever going to get that back? >> I I I hope so.”
