Podcast host Katie Clark strongly advises travelers against using airport ATMs in Italy due to unfavorable exchange rates and high charges, and also notes potential security risks. She recommends withdrawing cash from bank ATMs, preferably inside a bank, or relying on card payments as they are widely accepted by law. Clark suggests an initial withdrawal of around 200 euros might be sufficient.
“please do not use the airport ATMs. They are a complete ripoff in terms of the exchange rate and the charges that they put on. The extra charges, plus there's slightly dicey in terms of security.”
