Governor Kathy Hochul attributed the appeal of Democratic Socialism in New York to widespread frustration over the rising cost of living and broken promises from Washington. She highlighted challenges faced by young people, including housing affordability and childcare access, and stated her administration's commitment to addressing these issues by reducing costs and building more housing.
“It is extreme frustration with the cost of everything going up, the knowledge that no matter how hard you work, you play by the rules, you'll never be able to have what your parents and grandparents had, which is the possibility of owning your own home.”
“So we just have to let them know we hear them. Number one, your message has been delivered. We get it. We also share the concerns. And note there's people like myself out there saying I'm going to do a billion dollar energy rebate to help pay utility bills.”
“The secret law outlived its usefulness. I just got that through the legislature, and people said they it was called debt out arrival even the last couple of days of session and until the budget was done, and I said, I'm not leaving town until I get this. I'm very aggressive when I have my priorities to drive down costs in New York.”
