Governor Kathy Hochul expressed strong support for expanding nuclear power in New York, viewing it as crucial for powering innovation and meeting energy demands. She is seeking federal approval for low-interest loans to fund nuclear projects and believes that streamlining the approval process, with federal cooperation, could significantly accelerate the deployment of new nuclear capacity.
“I have eight communities upstate. They're begging for it. I have locations, I have existing facilities. I have four nuclear reactors that have been working successfully since nineteen sixties. The communities love them. They're good paying jobs. That's where I want to be able to do this.”
“Nuclear often supposedly takes ten years for approvals. Said, seven of those years are at the federal level. Said, you work on cutting yours, don't compromise safety, and I'll work on streamlining. Mind we get this done in a couple of years.”
