Governor Kathy Hochul stated that New York would prioritize attracting large-scale investments like Micron's semiconductor facility over powering large, potentially vacant data centers. She emphasized the creation of thousands of jobs associated with the semiconductor industry and her commitment to securing power for such projects, including expanding nuclear energy capacity.
“Now, I will say, I will work with you to get the power you need. And I've structured arrangements with the New York Power Authority and they're also helping me with my effort to bring more nuclear to New York.”
“But if I have to choose between powering a largely vacant data center with the same amount of power, I can have a micround with thousand jobs. I can tell you right now, where I'm going so they can come under the conditions we lay out. But I'm also going to be vesting a lot of my energy on the good paying jobs that'll be there for the long term.”
