Anthropic's platform has evolved significantly from its initial state as just the messages API. Katelyn Lesse highlighted that they've introduced standards like MCP and developer tooling, but the core development has been towards creating higher-order abstractions. These abstractions help customers build agentic work out-of-the-box by addressing challenges like infrastructure management for sandboxes and context window management for harnesses.
“Yeah, if you look back, um, so when I joined Anthropic or nearly a year ago, um, the platform was basically just the messages API. Um, it was the messages API.”
“Um, you know, we have come out with standards like MCP, we obviously have developer tooling and our SDKs and our docs and console and things like this, but for the most part, it was a stateless API.”
“And so we found that we could piece together our primitives and stand up all the same infrastructure that we're finding ourselves standing up internally to power our own products and arrive at some higher order abstractions that let you do more agentic work out of the box.”
