Barbara Liskov identified the primary motivation for her early work in distributed systems as the desire to create reliable file systems that could be accessed by multiple users simultaneously. The systems community recognized the need for such a solution to manage shared data across networks.
“We could all see that it would be really nice to have a file system that was implemented at many replicas and where lots of people could be using the same files.”
“And so this was a problem that was sitting there in the systems area that people were interested in.”
