Bobby Rebell identifies common 'money scripts' including money avoidance, worship, vigilance, and status. She emphasizes that recognizing these scripts is the first step toward challenging them and developing healthier financial behaviors.
“Well, there are several. One is money avoidance, where people just don't want to deal with money at all. They might not open their bills, they might not look at their bank statements. Another is money worship, where they believe that money is the solution to all their problems and they're constantly striving for more. Then there's money vigilance, which is about being extremely frugal and anxious about spending. And finally, there's money status, where people use money to signal social status and they feel pressure to buy things to impress others.”
“The first step is awareness. Just recognizing which script you're operating from is a huge step. Then, we can work on challenging those scripts and developing healthier ones.”
