James Hammond argues that despite issues with corruption in sports organizations and host countries, the World Cup demonstrates the power of travel to bring people together. He points to the positive atmosphere and interactions between fans from different nations as evidence of people's willingness to learn from and respect each other's cultures.
“But the thing you should concentrate on World Cup is the people. And the people who attended the World Cup from all countries around the world has shown that together, they can provide a positive atmosphere and an inclusive atmosphere and one of respect, like ability, and a willingness to learn about each other's culture.”
“But the Mexicans really took the English on board. And even after defeat, any English fan to a party and celebrated through the night, even though their own team had just lost and got knocked out of the World Cup. I mean, if that doesn't define to you what the normal person on the street is like, I don't know what will.”
“So I think when you reflect on what this World Cup is looking like, I think that should give you the motivation to maybe go and travel to a new country or new place.”
