Andrew Cheung believes the market is not fully accounting for the imminent threat quantum computing poses to cryptocurrencies. He highlights that while 'Q day' (when quantum computers can break encryption) is still some years away, hackers can already be collecting data, like public keys, to decrypt later.
“I I think this is a very good question to begin with. I I in my opinion, I think the market, um, to some extent, had factoring in some of the risk. And but it's not like to the full degree.”
“But then the problem is that, um, Q day doesn't happen on that day. Q day happens like today or yesterday already because hackers can already grab your data.”
“The data means your public key in crypto, you'll be using crypto as an example, or your banking transaction, they are all encrypted today. But then they wait until they got hold of a powerful quantum computer a few years down the road and then they do the cracking.”
