Scott Trench and Evan Lawler discuss data comparing rent-to-income ratios for renters aged 25 to 29. Scott reveals that rent-to-income is remarkably flat or only modestly worse, sitting around 32.8% in 2024 compared to 32.6% in 2014, with rents cooling in recent years.
“The surprising answer is that rent to income is not dramatically worse for Gen Z than it was for millennial at the same age. Nationally, it looks flat to perhaps modestly worse.”
“The data set it compares is 2014 to 2024. And it says that the rent to renter household income ratio is about 32.6% for me in 2014, around your age. And for you, it's 32.8% in 2024, 10 years later.”
