Toni Fakoohi from MetLife believes that AI will ultimately be a net positive for national productivity, drawing a parallel to the early days of the dot-com boom. However, she cautions that the path to realizing these benefits will not be smooth, noting that the significant productivity gains seen in the late 1990s and early 2000s took nearly a decade to manifest after initial experimentation.
“I would say yes. But how we get there is certainly not a smooth and easy path. Clearly there's massive gains to be had from productivity. But if you think about let's say we are something like in nineteen ninety eight or so in terms of the nineteen ninety six ninety ninety eight in terms of the dot com boom, you didn't really see you know, you played around with things. You thought it was kind of cool, the internet, but you didn't really have the productivity benefits until a decade or sole Yewer so on.”
