An anonymous listener asked how much they should save for college. The host explained that the answer depends on many factors, including public vs. private school, four-year vs. two-year degrees, the child's aptitude for scholarships, current costs, and inflation. Crucially, they emphasized prioritizing retirement savings over college savings, as one can borrow for college but not for retirement.
“And the question is, how much should I save? Now, this is a classic. It's the eternal question, right? How much should I save for college? And the answer is, it depends. It depends on a ton of factors.”
“Prioritize retirement savings first. You can borrow for college. You can't borrow for retirement.”
“So, if you're looking at how much to save, number one, always prioritize retirement. Number two, figure out what the cost is going to be.”
