Dr. Christof Koch explained how quantum mechanics, particularly concepts like entanglement and wave function collapse, challenges the classical understanding of physicalism. He noted that the quantum world suggests properties of objects may not exist definitively until measured or interacted with.
“Now, of course, we know the world is not described by classical physics. because one of the two revolutionary series of the 20th century is quantum mechanics.”
“What we mean, so if you have a system, a single quantum mechanical system, and this relates to consciousness already, is single quantum mechanical system, you can separate them over vast distances, but they're still one system.”
“But what that means is we don't know anymore what it means exactly to be physical. And some people in the foundation of physics in fact, are now arguing that there may not be absolute facts.”
