Dr. Christof Koch, a neuroscientist and physicist, explored the philosophical challenges of physicalism and the "hard problem" of consciousness. He highlighted how quantum mechanics complicates the traditional materialist view of reality, suggesting that properties like mass might not be absolute until observed.
“So that's been one persistent challenge. And in fact, some some physicists in foundational physics are now bringing in consciousness. They might, they are beginning to argue that consciousness in a sense has to be built into the rock bottom. The rock bottom description of our of our reality.”
“The other challenge with physicalism has always been what the philosopher David Chalmers calls the hard problem. To explain why is it that three pounds of brain matter like this, and in principle, it's just like another piece of matter like this. Okay, I mean, this is hard matter or semi-hard matter. This is, you know, soft matter, squishy matter, but in principle, it's constituted out of atoms and molecules and electrons and all of that interacting by the laws of physics. Nothing special here. Yet, this thing can love and hate. Well, where does that come from?”
“But why should they be linked? There's nothing in the laws of science that tells us matter can love and hate.”
