Jason Shapiro suggests that speculators are surprisingly under-positioned in energy markets, based on his analysis of commitment of traders data. He finds a lack of chasing by speculators in crude oil, Brent crude, WTI, heating oil, and natural gas, which he believes indicates potential for further price increases.
“What's been surprising is the lack of chasing by speculators that's gone on in energy. And I think that they should be giving the move, uh, in the market.”
“What I think they should be doing is they should be much longer than they are.”
“And that would make me think that there's a lot of room for this market to go higher.”
